Course Description:
Over 300,000 sport and recreational concussions present to emergency rooms and urgent care centers each year. This number is growing rapidly with increasing public awareness. Recent CDC estimates indicate the occurrence of 2.5M concussions each year in high school athletes alone. This course will provide the state-of-the-science overview of concussion injury, including epidemiology, pathophysiology, consequences, diagnosis and management. Attendees will learn the most current guidelines in concussion diagnosis, physical exam, ancillary testing, and treatment options.
Speaker: Harry Kerasidis, MD
Over his medical career, Dr. Kerasidis, has treated thousands of patients with concussions. Through his practice, he created new baseline measures, assessments, reporting tools and a 5-step recovery care plan which provides the foundation of the XLNTbrain offerings now available anywhere, anytime through technological advances. Dr. Kerasidis is a founder and the CEO of XLNTbrain LLC. He has been treating concussion injury for over 20 years. A graduate of Georgetown University School of Medicine, he completed his residency in Neurology and a fellowship in Clinical Neurophysiology at the Georgetown University Hospital. Dr. Kerasidis ’professional interests include cognitive neurology, sleep disorders, and behavioral correlates of EEG. He is certified by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology, the American Board of Sleep Medicine, the Board Certification International Alliance, and the International QEEG Certification Board. A native Washingtonian, Dr. Kerasidis was raised in Northern Virginia, and settled in Southern Maryland with his wife, Dr. Tammera Schmalz after completing their training where they raised 3 daughters, Zoe, Alexa and Tassia. Dr. Kerasidis is the medical director of the Center for Neuroscience at CalvertHealth.
