Course Description:
Head injury following trips and falls or participation in sports is a common cause for presentation to the urgent care or ED. Over the years, our approach to evaluation of such injuries has changed. In this short course, I will present my experience over 32 years practicing Emergency Medicine on our understanding of TBI and concussion. Participants will learn how recommendations for workup, including the role of imaging of the head and brain has changed, along with current evidence based recommendations. A brief summary of the latest tests for diagnosing concussion will be presented. Finally, some emerging technology and ongoing research will be discussed in order to obtain a glimpse into what the future might hold in caring for these patients.

Edward Michelson, MD is Professor and Chair of the Department of Emergency Medicine, Paul L. Foster School of Medicine, Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center, El Paso. Dr. Michelson graduated from MIT with a degree in Biomedical Engineering, followed by medical school at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, MO. He trained in both Internal Medicine and Emergency Medicine at the McGaw Medical Center, Northwestern University, Chicago, IL. Dr. Michelson is board certified in both Internal Medicine and Emergency Medicine and a fellow of the American College of Emergency Medicine. He has had over 30 years of academic practice teaching medical students and residents at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, Northwestern University Northwestern Memorial Hospital, Univeristy Hospitals Case Medical Center and Case Western University School of Medicine and the Wexner Medical Center of The Ohios State University School of Medicine, prior to his current position in El Paso. Dr. Michelson has interests in applications of new technology to teaching and practice of Emergency Medicine. He has been involved in EMS, Toxicology, computers in medicine, clinical research as well as hospital and department administration and the buisness of medicine. Current clinical areas of interest include traumatic brain injury and treatment of headache. He and his family now reside in El Paso, but travel regularly to Scotland to visit family.
